SS-31 (elamipretide, also referenced as MTP-131) is a synthetic aromatic-cationic tetrapeptide with the sequence D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, where Dmt is 2',6'-dimethyltyrosine. This 50mg presentation is the bulk research format, supplied in the same single lyophilised vial as the 10mg. The alternating cationic and aromatic residues give the molecule a net positive charge at physiological pH while remaining membrane-permeant, and it is this combination that underlies its defining property: selective association with cardiolipin, the signature phospholipid of the inner mitochondrial membrane. Research has focused on how that interaction affects cristae curvature, the assembly of electron transport chain supercomplexes, and electron leak at complexes I and III. Because the peptide targets a structural lipid rather than a receptor, it is investigated across a wide range of mitochondrial bioenergetics models. Supplied as lyophilised powder.
