What is SS-31?
SS-31 is D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, where Dmt is 2',6'-dimethyltyrosine. The alternating aromatic and basic residues let it cross membranes without a transporter and associate with cardiolipin, a phospholipid found almost exclusively in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Research groups use it in isolated mitochondria and cell models to study cardiolipin interactions, electron transport and oxidative stress.
