Selank is a synthetic analogue of the immunomodulatory peptide tuftsin, a heptapeptide with the sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro. Research has examined its anxiolytic, nootropic and immunomodulatory properties. Selank is structurally related to Semax but targets different receptor pathways, with studies indicating modulation of GABA and serotonin signalling. Commonly researched in psychopharmacology and immune function studies. Supplied as lyophilised powder, third-party tested, lab certificate published on this page.

Published research on Selank is indexed on PubMed. See our full UK buyer's guide for Selank.

Research Overview

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide analogue of tuftsin, an endogenous immunomodulatory peptide derived from the Fc region of immunoglobulin G. Developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Russia, Selank has been studied extensively for its anxiolytic properties, GABA system modulation, and effects on immune function. The compound is often researched alongside Semax, where Semax investigations concentrate on cognitive enhancement and BDNF modulation, Selank research focuses on anxiety reduction, stress response regulation, and GABAergic neurotransmission. Selank has been approved in Russia as a pharmaceutical treatment for generalised anxiety disorder. Research has examined its influence on serotonin and norepinephrine metabolism, its modulation of interleukin expression, and its effects on enkephalin degradation. The peptide's dual anxiolytic and immunomodulatory profile represents a unique pharmacological combination not commonly found in single-molecule compounds. Studies have documented its effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and its ability to stabilise enkephalins in blood serum, contributing to its anxiolytic mechanism of action.

Selank is built on the same design principle as Semax. It is the tuftsin sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg extended with a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro tail, giving TKPRPGP, and as with Semax that PGP extension exists to blunt aminopeptidase degradation rather than to add activity of its own. The two compounds come from the same institute and share a structural strategy, which is why they are so often studied as a pair.

Two mechanisms dominate the published work. The first is GABAergic: research reports altered expression of genes encoding GABA-A receptor subunits in rat brain, which is the usual explanation offered for the anxiolytic profile. The second is enkephalinergic, Selank having been reported to inhibit the degradation of enkephalins in blood plasma and thereby prolong their action. Effects on interleukin expression and on serotonin and noradrenaline metabolism are described across the same literature, and the immunomodulatory activity traces back to tuftsin's own role as an immunostimulatory fragment of immunoglobulin G.

The same evidential caveat applies as to Semax, and for the same reason. The literature is predominantly Russian-language, concentrated in a small institutional cluster, and thinly replicated independently. Selank is registered in Russia for generalised anxiety disorder but holds no marketing authorisation in the UK, the EU or the US. Supplied as lyophilised powder for in-vitro laboratory research only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Research Information

What is Selank?

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide with the sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro (TKPRPGP), molecular weight approximately 751.9 g/mol. Its first four residues are tuftsin, the endogenous immunomodulatory tetrapeptide Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg released from the Fc region of immunoglobulin G heavy chain, and the C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro extension was added to protect that fragment from rapid enzymatic degradation, the same stabilisation strategy used in Semax. It was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and is registered as a nasal anxiolytic preparation in the Russian Federation, but it holds no marketing authorisation from the MHRA, EMA or FDA. The reported pharmacology spans GABAergic modulation, enkephalin stabilisation through inhibition of enkephalin-degrading enzymes, and cytokine expression, reflecting the immune origin of its parent sequence. As with Semax, the primary literature is almost entirely Russian in origin and lacks independent Western replication, which is the honest caveat on the evidence base. Supplied as lyophilised powder for in-vitro research use only.

Selank vs Semax

Selank and Semax are the two flagship peptides of the same design programme, and the comparison is genuinely informative because they share the identical C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro stabilising tail while differing entirely in the message fragment it protects. Semax carries Met-Glu-His-Phe, the core of the ACTH(4-10) fragment, and its literature is weighted towards neurotrophin expression, BDNF and trkB signalling, and cerebral ischaemia models. Selank carries Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg, the immunoglobulin-derived tetrapeptide tuftsin, and its literature is weighted towards anxiety and stress-response models, GABAergic neurotransmission, enkephalin stabilisation and interleukin expression. Neither parent fragment survives long unprotected, which is why the shared Pro-Gly-Pro tail exists in both. For experimental design, the practical point is that these are non-interchangeable compounds with different parent biology, different receptor-level hypotheses and largely non-overlapping endpoints, so a protocol built on the anxiolytic literature needs Selank and one built on the neurotrophin literature needs Semax. The two are often run side by side precisely because the shared tail controls for the stabilisation chemistry.

Selank Research Applications

Selank is studied across preclinical psychopharmacology and immunology. The behavioural strand covers rodent models of anxiety and stress response, including elevated plus maze and open field paradigms, with reported anxiolytic-like activity in the Russian literature. The neurochemical strand covers GABAergic transmission, where Selank has been reported to modulate GABA-A receptor-mediated currents and to alter the expression of GABAergic system genes, alongside serotonergic and noradrenergic pathway effects and inhibition of enkephalin-degrading enzymes, which raises the tone of endogenous opioid peptides without adding an exogenous ligand. The immunological strand, reflecting the tuftsin parentage, covers interleukin-6 expression, Th1/Th2 cytokine balance and antiviral gene induction in cell and rodent models. Researchers should treat effect sizes cautiously given the concentration of the primary data in a single research tradition.

Reconstitution Guide

Allow vials to reach room temperature, then sterilise the rubber stopper of both the peptide vial and the bacteriostatic water vial with an alcohol swab. Slowly draw your bacteriostatic water into a sterile insulin syringe, then inject it gently down the inner glass wall of the peptide vial, never directly onto the lyophilised powder. Once added, gently swirl the vial in a slow circular motion until fully dissolved. Never shake or vortex. Selank contains no methionine, cysteine or tryptophan, so it lacks the most oxidation-prone residues and is a comparatively robust sequence to handle, though standard aseptic technique still governs the useful life of the solution. The solution should be clear and colourless. Label the vial with the reconstitution date and refrigerate immediately.

See our full peptide reconstitution guide and reconstitution calculator for step-by-step protocol.

Storage Instructions

Lyophilised vials should be stored at -20°C, protected from light and moisture, and remain stable for up to 24 months. Once reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, store the solution at 2-8°C and use within approximately 4 weeks, preparing single-use aliquots at -20°C for anything longer. The proline-rich backbone makes this a comparatively stable heptapeptide, so in practice the in-use limit is set by sterility rather than by chemical degradation, which is an argument for aliquoting rather than repeatedly puncturing one stock vial. Handle under sterile laboratory conditions throughout.
